Wild Places

Wild  Places

Rockwell Kent (1882-1971) absorbed “ the will to live deliberatively in wild places where he could find nurture in his inner wilderness – those lush and desolate landscapes of the soul from which all art is born.”

In the heart of a tranquil rural community, nestled amidst the serene embrace of nature, Susan and I have found our sanctuary. Our home overlooks the vast expanse of the ocean, its rhythmic waves echoing the timeless cadence of life itself. But it is not just the panoramic views that draw us here; it is the call of the wild, the beckoning of untamed landscapes that stirs something deep within our souls.

For us, living deliberately in these wild places isn't just about seeking solace in the beauty of nature; it's about finding nurture in our inner wilderness. There's a symbiotic relationship between the external world and our internal landscape—a harmony that resonates within the lush and desolate terrains of our souls. In these moments of solitude, amidst the towering redwoods and along the winding hiking trails, we discover a canvas upon which our spirits paint the art of existence.

Living amidst such untamed splendor fosters a deep sense of connection—to the land, to each other, and to the essence of our being. Every rustling leaf, every whispering breeze, speaks to us in a language older than words—a language that transcends the confines of human speech and resonates with the primal rhythms of life itself.

In this rural idyll, we find inspiration at every turn. The ever-changing moods of the ocean, the play of light and shadow among the ancient redwoods, serve as constant reminders of the impermanence of existence. And yet, amidst this flux, there is a sense of timeless beauty—a beauty that transcends the limitations of time and space, inviting us to embrace the present moment with gratitude and awe.

Our life here is not without its challenges. The harsh realities of rural living—the isolation, the rugged terrain—demand resilience and resourcefulness. But it is precisely these challenges that sharpen our senses, heighten our awareness, and deepen our appreciation for the simple joys of life.

As we gaze out upon the vast expanse of the ocean, with the salt-laden breeze caressing our faces, we are reminded of our place in the grand tapestry of existence. We are but fleeting specks in the vastness of time and space, and yet, in our own small way, we contribute to the ever-unfolding story of life.

In the end, it is not the material wealth or worldly success that defines our lives, but rather the richness of our experiences, the depth of our connections, and the beauty of our inner landscapes. And so, we continue to dwell in these wild places, nourishing our souls amidst the untamed beauty of nature, and finding solace in the timeless art of existence.
