Being interviewed by Terry Gross (again).
Terry Gross: Welcome back to Fresh Air, Gary. Congratulations on your latest best-selling mystery novel, "Sherlock Holmes on the Mendocino Coast." It's great to have you back on the show.
Gary Levenson-Palmer: Thank you, Terry. It's always a pleasure to be here.
Terry Gross: Your latest novel has been receiving a lot of positive reviews. Can you tell us a little bit about the story and what inspired you to write it?
Gary Levenson-Palmer: Sure, the story takes place on the Mendocino Coast, where Sherlock Holmes is on a vacation. But, as usual, he can't help but get involved in a mystery when he discovers a dead body. The novel is inspired by my love for the Sherlock Holmes character and the beautiful Northern California coastline. I wanted to write a story that combines mystery, adventure, and the stunning natural scenery of the area.
Terry Gross: You've written several mystery novels before. What makes "Sherlock Holmes on the Mendocino Coast" stand out from your previous works?
Gary Levenson-Palmer: Well, I think this novel is different in that it brings a classic character like Sherlock Holmes into a new setting. I also wanted to explore the relationship between Holmes and his partner, Dr. Watson, in a new way. The Mendocino Coast provides a unique backdrop for the story and allows me to delve into themes like environmental conservation and small-town politics.
Terry Gross: Your writing career spans over three decades, and you've won several awards, including the Pulitzer Prize. How has your writing process evolved over the years?
Gary Levenson-Palmer: I think my process has become more disciplined over the years. I used to write whenever inspiration struck, but now I have a set routine that helps me stay focused and productive. I also do a lot more research now, especially when writing historical novels or novels set in specific locations.
Terry Gross: Finally, what's next for you? Are you working on a new project?
Gary Levenson-Palmer: Yes, I am. I'm currently working on a new historical novel set in Mendocino during the 60’s and 70’s. Someone I know here on the Coast, and who has been in a writing group with me, is going to be the central character. It's a story that's been on my mind for a while, and I'm excited to see where it takes me.
Terry Gross: Well, we can't wait to read it. Thanks again for joining us, Gary.
Gary Levenson-Palmer: Thank you, Terry. It's been a pleasure.
