An Early Memory - Saturday Morning TV

One of my earliest memories is of Saturday morning television.  The line-up, in no particular order, included Rin Tin Tin; Sky King; and the Lone Ranger

Rin Tin Tin was about Rusty and his German Shepard named Rin Tin Tin.  I remember that Rusty was an orphan and lived in a Fort with Rip Masters.  Each week Rin Tim would save someone from the Fort at the last possible minute.

Sky King was similar in many ways but rather than a dog saving the day, it was Sky King in his airplane the songbird.  That plane could do just about anything.  And oh, Sky King had a niece named Penny, who I believe was orphaned, and lived with her Uncle Sky   I remember having such a crush on Penny.  She could appear in my dreams.    She was always there to fly with Sky or to help him out in saving people or catching the bad guy.

The Lone Ranger.  This time it is a masked guy and his sidekick Tonto, always saving the day at the last minute.   In this case, the Lone Ranger is sort of the orphan as he was found near death and seems to have no family other than his relationship with Tonto.  His horse Silver always played an active role and who can forget the famous line “Hi-yo Silver, Away!”

Maybe add to this mix of these three favorites, my Sunday night favorite, Lassie.  Timmy, an orphan, and his dog Lassie, with Lassie always saving the day.

There were two other shows that I always watched on Saturday morning. The Mickey Mouse Club and the Howdy Doody Show.  I watched them but they clearly were in my second tier.  I think I watched them just to fill the time and because it was the thing to do on Saturday morning.

Give me a dog, masked man, or airplane and throw in an orphan for good luck and you’ve got real TV.
